Stansted Airport Pick Up: Where to Wait and What It Costs
Stansted has a single terminal, so there is only one arrivals area. The cost depends on where you wait. This guide covers every option from the free first hour at Mid Stay to a meet-and-greet driver.
For a Stansted airport pick up, everyone comes out into the same arrivals hall because the airport has a single terminal. The cheapest place to wait is the free pick-up area in the Mid Stay car park, which is linked to the terminal by shuttle bus. The most convenient is the Short Stay car park beside the terminal, which charges by the length of your stay. The Express Set Down zone on the forecourt is designed for quick drop-offs, not for waiting.
Your pick-up options side by side
| Where you wait | Cost | How the passenger reaches you |
|---|---|---|
| Mid Stay car park pick-up area | Free for a limited time | Free shuttle bus from the terminal |
| Short Stay car park | Charged in time bands | A short walk from arrivals |
| Express Set Down (forecourt) | Charged on every visit | Not intended for collections |
| Pre-booked driver | Parking included in the fare | Met inside the arrivals hall |
Tariffs change, sometimes more than once a year, so check the airport's own website for the current Short Stay and set-down prices before you leave home.
Which option suits your situation
The flight is on time and the passenger travels light
Mid Stay works well here. Wait in the car, ask the passenger to message you once they have cleared baggage reclaim, and they ride the shuttle out to you. The trade-off is time: the bus adds a wait and a short ride, which is fine for an adult with a cabin bag and much less fun for a family with car seats and a pushchair.
You want to meet them inside
Use the Short Stay car park and walk to the arrivals hall. This is the option for elderly relatives, a parent travelling alone with young children, or anyone visiting for the first time who would struggle to find a bus stop. Keep an eye on the clock, because the charge rises in steps.
The forecourt
The Express Set Down area outside the terminal is built for drop-offs. Number-plate cameras record every visit, there is no barrier or ticket machine on the way out, and the charge has to be paid online by midnight the following day; unpaid visits lead to a penalty notice. Circling the forecourt waiting for a delayed flight is the most expensive way to collect anyone.
Timing the pick-up
Touchdown is only the start. Many of Stansted's gates are in satellite buildings reached by an airside transit train, and after that come passport control and the baggage belt. Passengers with cabin bags only can be out quickly, while a full flight landing at the same time as several others, or a long queue for non-UK passports, takes much longer. Track the flight online, and do not start your parking clock until the passenger messages that they are through the border.
Booking a driver instead
If nobody can do the run, or the flight lands at 01:00, a pre-booked car removes the parking question entirely. The driver follows the flight, waits in the arrivals hall with the passenger's name, and the parking cost is part of the fare.
