Navigating the London Airport Network
Travelling across London's airports takes careful planning. The capital is served by five main airports, each with different distances, peak-time traffic patterns and motorway bottlenecks. Choosing the right vehicle and departure time is the difference between a stress-free departure and a missed flight.
- Heathrow Airport (LHR): about 15 miles west of Central London. Most journeys use the A4 and M4, with the western arc of the M25 (Junctions 13–15) used from outside London. Peak-time queues regularly build on the A4/M4 approach through Hammersmith and Chiswick and at the tunnel entrance for Terminals 2 and 3.
- Gatwick Airport (LGW): about 28 miles south of the capital in West Sussex. Journeys follow the A23 and M23, crossing the M25 at Junction 7. The A23 through Croydon and Purley is prone to commuter congestion, so allow at least a 30-minute buffer in the 07:00–09:30 rush.
- Stansted (STN) & Luton (LTN): London's main northern airports. Stansted transfers use the M11, which flows well apart from the M25 interchange (M25 J27 / M11 J6). Luton transfers run up the M1, where the Junction 10 airport approach can cause local delays.
- London City Airport (LCY): in the Royal Docks in East London. Journeys here are dominated by city traffic, particularly on the A13, the Limehouse Link and the Blackwall Tunnel approaches.
